Sam Bass

Founder Emeritus

Sam founded Beacon Wealthcare in 1998. He has thirty seven years of experience investing money for his clients. Prior to organizing Beacon Wealthcare, he was associated with Wheat First Securities (now Wells Fargo Advisors), as a Registered Representative and a Certified Portfolio Manager. He was a charter member and a production leader of Wheat’s fee-based management platform for nine years beginning in 1989. He began his career in 1983 with Carolina Securities, headquartered in Raleigh, NC .

In 2006 Sam fundamentally changed the firm’s focus to a client/goal-centered approach from asset/return-centered. Since then, clients have enjoyed the present more, worrying less about finances and having greater confidence in their future.

Sam holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Hampden-Sydney College, 1975 and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Wake Forest University, 1981. While at Wake Forest, he concentrated in Finance and International Finance, assisting Dr. Robert Carlson publish a textbook on International Finance. In that effort, he spent a summer with the London School of Economics. Following Wake Forest and prior to his career in investments, Mr. Bass worked with First Union National Bank for three years as a commercial lending officer in the Research Triangle.

Sam is a devoted Christian and serves in several ministries at Church of the Apostles in Raleigh. He serves as Vice Chair of NeighborHealth Center, which provides excellent, compassionate and accessible health care to those formerly with none. Sam enjoys family, sailing, biking, and writing.
